Substances such as wood oe cylinder and how they stand during an earthquake. (Not just those two, please give as many examples as you feel are necessary)

Chosen Answer:

If you talk about earthquake, you can’t just talk about the substances of a building. Whatever it’s built of, the most important thing to prevent it from destruction when an earthquake happens is its structure system. The structure system of the building must allow the building to “move” in an entire system when an earthquake happens so it won’t break in any part and cause a destruction. There are also joint details that you have to pay attention well and do in the right way to make sure it won’t break during an earthquake. So far I studied reinforced concrete and I think it’s one of the best substances for the structure system “the bones of a building” because it can hold tensile force and pressure force so it will allow the building to “move” together even during a random direction of force caused by an earthquake. In the case of reinforced concrete, there are also specific ratio of portland cement, jackstone and pebble that must be obeyed to create a concrete. These ratio are varied and depends on whether it’s for the column or for the foundation of the building. There are also distance-dimension ratio for the reinforced concrete beam and columns. The most common ratio is between 1/15 to 1/10 times the distance between columns. I also studied wood truss and wood is perfectly safe for it, depends on the joint and how do you make the entire system of the truss (different form of truss have different load distribution, but basically a truss is created based on that tensile and pressure force. For the non-structural things such as walls, doors, windows, you can use most of the thing, bricks, woods, it’s fine.
