How long did it take for the dinosaurs to die out?

After the meteor struck 65 million years ago?

It seems that the meteor started a series of cataclysmic events. It caused devastation to the local area, with effects that turned global. It caused tsunamis and earthquakes, acid rain, and increased volcanic activity. At some point the Earth’s climate cooled some and the oxygen in the atmosphere decreased 30%.

How long did it take for dinosaurs world wide to be completely extinguished? Days, years, generations?

Chosen Answer:

Dinosaurs were on their way out for millions of years before the extinction “event” – and it wasn’t just an impact. The Deccan Traps in India caused a CO2 flux in the atmosphere enough to cause massive climate warming (for hundreds of thousands of years).

If it were a meteorite impact, it would have done the job in years to decades. But the geologic and fossil records show a step-wise extinction that took hundreds of thousands of years.
